JOB TITLE: Clinical Facilitator – African American Fellowship

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
A CSC Clinical Facilitator is responsible for the facilitation of support groups
for people affected by cancer at Cancer Support Community or at another designated location. Clinical Facilitators are highly experienced, licensed clinical mental health professionals who are specifically trained in CSC philosophy and methodology and utilize those skills in group facilitation at CSC. Clinical Facilitators may also be expected to oversee educational workshops and other programs as well as representing Cancer Support Community mission, core concepts and philosophy to the general public.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Facilitating CSC support groups: Within the framework of the Cancer Support Community model, a Clinical Facilitator helps group members share their cancer related experiences in regularly scheduled group meetings. Clinical Facilitators assist groups of people affected by cancer to explore positive and negative emotions, better understand and reduce distress, and improve their quality of life. Clinical Facilitators help to assure that participants gain knowledge and information from each other to become more active in their cancer treatment and recovery (Patient Active). Clinical Facilitators do not serve or present themselves as experts in cancer or cancer treatment. Overall, a Clinical Facilitator helps CSC participants discover ways to reduce their sense of isolation, regain a sense of control, and find hope that they can cope with and hopefully recover from their cancer. This opening is for the African American Fellowship program, a monthly drop-in support group for African Americans affected by cancer including patients and their loved ones, with the potential for additional facilitation opportunities as available.
2) Community Health Advisor Program: Community outreach is an important part of the African American Fellowship Program. The facilitator of this program is expected to attend monthly meetings with our Community Health Advisor Program team, a group of volunteers and staff who work within the African American community using a community health advisor model to increase awareness of the Fellowship and CSC services.
3) Overseeing workshops and special events: Clinical Facilitators may be asked to serve as “hosts” for educational workshops, and other special programs. Expectations include, but are not limited to, introducing speakers/workshop leaders, providing introductory remarks that include a brief overview of CSC-GAA, participating in the program, occasional facilitation with presenter, fielding questions and answers, providing evaluations and closure and providing feedback to the Program Director on the process and content of the workshop.
4) Supervision and training: Participate in clinical supervision meetings at least once per month as well as completion of time sheets and other reports as required by the Facility. Other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director. One site training and observation must be completed prior to facilitating alone.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Licensed therapist (social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, etc) in the state of Michigan. Documentation of licensure is required.
2) Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in group facilitation.
3) Willingness to master and implement CSC psychosocial support methods, participate in ongoing clinical supervision, and the overall experience of a therapeutic community.
3) Ability to facilitate groups of individuals with serious chronic and/or terminal illness.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Experience working with oncology population.
2) Experience working with minority populations.
