The Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor offers free virtual programs via Zoom and hybrid programs.  Hybrid programs include the option to join either in-person or via Zoom. We hope that you will explore some of our free programs, and please don’t hesitate to give us a call if we can help support you. WEEKLY LIVING WITH CANCER GROUPS 

For patients and survivors in active treatment or up to about a year post-treatment. Three different groups meet weekly:

ART AS REFLECTIVE PRACTICE – VIRTUAL

Join other patients, survivors, and loved ones in a supportive space where you are guided in creative exercises as a tool for expression and discovery. This group aims to foster understanding and connection as we observe, discuss, create and reflect. The emphasis is not on technical art instruction or skill, but rather will focus on exploration and personal expression. No art experience necessary, just a willingness to explore and express. Facilitated by board-certified art therapist Kathleen Buday, ATR-BC.

CANCER 101: SUPPORT FOR RECENTLY DIAGNOSED PATIENTS

If you were diagnosed with cancer in the last six months, join us for this six-week series to connect with others, gain support, and ease the adjustment to living with cancer. We schedule this series based on interest and availability, so sign up today and we’ll be in touch soon about scheduling.

KID SUPPORT, TEEN TIME, AND PARENTING SUPPORT

This four-week series on Zoom brings together families impacted by cancer to share support. After starting all together, separate groups will break out for parents, kids, and teens. PART ONE: WHAT IS A LEGACY PROJECT?  – VIRTUAL

This two-part class begins with an introduction to Legacy Projects—what they are and how they can be created. You’ll learn how to use various items and materials to craft a meaningful project that reflects the unique story of an individual and their family. This class is open to both current and former caregivers and individuals living with cancer.

OPTIMIZING BOWEL AND BLADDER FUNCTION AFTER RADIATION AND CHEMOTHERAPY – VIRTUAL

Jessica Somerville, PT, DPT, The Recovery Project

Jessica Somerville is a pelvic floor physical therapist with a strong passion for cancer survivorship rehabilitation. This presentation will explore common bowel, bladder, and pelvic floor complications that may occur following chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Topics will include scarring, constipation, diarrhea, sexual dysfunction, and incontinence, as well as how pelvic floor physical therapy can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Join us at CSC for an in-person watch party of the 3rd annual Young Breast Cancer Symposium from MDHHS. This symposium will address unique challenges that young breast cancer survivors and thrivers face including topics on holistic care, sexual health, and provider communication. Gastrointestinal distress is common among cancer patients and survivors and can be one of the most challenging aspects of living with a cancer diagnosis. Join Dr. Thomas Enzler from the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center to explore the causes of GI issues during and after cancer treatment, as well as tips for management, discussion, and Q&A.

Anticipatory grief is a natural emotional response to expected loss—whether it’s tied to health, identity, relationships, or the future. In this workshop, the facilitators, will guide patients and their loved ones through the many forms grief can take. Through open discussion, shared connection, and simple art therapy techniques, participants will have the opportunity to express emotions, explore meaning, and find comfort in community. No artistic experience needed.

MOVE WELL IN MIDLIFE AT CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY – IN PERSON

Join our six-week movement program for individuals in active or post-cancer treatment experiencing the menopause transition. In collaboration with expert instructors at MOVE Wellness, you’ll build a safe, targeted, and effective strength routine alongside peers in a supportive environment. Limited to ten participants, this program offers a customized, safe approach to help you feel stronger and more balanced during this transition. This class will be mat-based Pilates, with exercises performed both on and off the floor. All levels of ability are welcome, and modifications will be provided.

REIKI FOR RELAXATION – IN PERSON AT CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY

Join us for free individual Reiki sessions. Our Reiki master will provide an energy technique by hovering their palms just above your body, moving them into a series of positions to help promote relaxation and reduce stress. Participants will remain fully clothed, with the option to remain in a seated position or by lying flat on a massage table.

TECHNIQUES FOR MANAGING FEAR & ANXIETY – HYBRID

Fear and anxiety are common experiences for patients, caregivers, and loved ones during the cancer experience. Join Robert McCurren, MD, for a session focusing on education, guided discussion, and explore gentle relaxation techniques to help ease emotions and relax the nervous system. The techniques will include gentle yoga, breathwork, and a simple meditation to help calm the mind.

WRITING FOR WELLNESS – IN PERSON

This group offers a creative outlet to explore the cancer experience through writing. Open to patients and loved ones

Our online social programs are designed to help you stay connected with others. Whether in person, by phone, or on Zoom, staying connected with others is so important when cancer is a part of life.

This weekly video conference gathering is a chance to come together (virtually) with others, chat and see some friendly faces.

Explore your creativity and connect with others in this art class. Our instructor will lead a creative expression project using supplies you have at home; a pen and paper is enough! No art experience is required.

Our Cancer Support Helpline is staffed by community navigators and resource specialists who have extensive experience in helping people affected by cancer. HOW TO JOIN VIRTUAL PROGRAMS

Support groups, healthy lifestyle classes, social programs, and more are available in real-time using our HIPAA-compliant videoconferencing platform, Zoom. In order to help protect your privacy, registration is required for all live programs. Once you register, we’ll send you the information you need to log on. Click below for instructions to access Zoom from your computer, tablet, or smartphone. If you don’t have a device that can connect to Zoom, you are also welcome to call in from a telephone. We’ll send out phone numbers and access codes along with the Zoom meeting links. If you are having trouble joining a program, please call Erin at 734-489-1631 for immediate assistance.
